Information for Pilgrims

Road Crossings.

The path crosses the A27 on the section between Alciston and Selmeston and again at the north end of Milton Street between Arlington and Wilmington. Please take great care as the road is very busy and the traffic fast.

Railway Line Crossings

The path crosses the London to Eastbourne railway track at the Berwick road crossing and at a footpath crossing between Arlington and Wilmington. Please take great care when crossing the railway.

Gates and Styles

There are a number of styles along the route (if you have a dog they will also need to be able to negotiate some of these).

In dry summer months the path is easy under foot and light footwear can be worn. In the winter months sections can become very muddy and wet, especially across cultivated fields and beside the river and waterproof footwear is necessary.

The walk is gentle with only short ascents except for the optional route between Wilmington and Alfriston which goes up to the top of Windover Hill (214m 702ft), above the ‘Long Man’, from which there is a spectacular panoramic view of the South Downs, Cuckmere River Valley and The English Channel.
